What size is Chunky chenille yarn?
Recently I was asked a few times on social media if BeCozi has a #10 Chunky chenille yarn. As a crafter who started a trend of Chunky chenille yarn at the beginning of 2016 I feel sad to see some companies use false information to attract more customers. I decided to write this post to explain the size of Chunky chenille yarn sold at BeCozi and everywhere else but we need to go a bit into a history of Chunky chenille yarn.
BeCozi company was started at the end of 2015 with official opening date of January 1, 2016. The craft world back then was all about Super Chunky Merino wool: technically a Merino wool roving used to manufacture a thin Merino wool. A Ukrainian girl launched a Kickstarter campaign showing how she was Arm knitting huge blankets using Merino wool roving which she called "Super Chunky Merino wool" as it was about 2.5-3 inches wide.
BeCozi started with selling Super Chunky Merino wool, blankets made with it and DIY kits to make blankets, pillows and many other things. I have always loved Merino wool but it is a very fragile and delicate yarn (roving). Blankets made with it looks incredibly beautiful but they are like your grandmother`s China - they should be for decorative purposes only. I started looking for an alternative to Super Chunky Merino wool, a thick yarn but not the wool and I found only one seller abroad who was making it back in February 2016. Unfortunately all chenille yarn is produced outside of the US, sad truth and a long story why.
Regular size chenille yarn was on the US and other countries craft markets forever, very thin but super soft yarn used mostly for baby blankets. That one seller abroad that I found was the one who created super thick Chenille yarn, about 2/3 of an inch yarn. I called it "Chunky chenille yarn" because it was not as thick as Super Chunky Merino wool. My company BeCozi registered that name with the US PTO as a registered trademark: BeCozi Chunky chenille yarn.
You see, there is such organization as the Craft Yarn Council and they have a very clear table with all sizes of yarn available on the market. You can find it here. (source)
BeCozi Chunky chenille and all similar yarns sold in the US at all craft stores and at all online stores - all are #7. There is no #10 chenille yarn.Â
There are a few Chinese companies selling their #7 chenille yarn directly at the US online platforms who decided to attract the attention of potential buyers by changing the number of their #7 chenille yarn and for some unknown reasons they thought #10 would sound good.
I will not write names of those companies but if you bought their yarn, you know who they are. Unfortunately it is not the only misleading information they provide about their yarn: one skein of BeCozi Chunky chenille yarn or any other similar yarn sold at most of the craft stores is 8 oz and about 26 yards. The only different yarn would be Michaels chenille yarn, that is 10 oz and about 30 yards.
The company which call their #7 chenille yarn as #10 would not tell you that their skeins are only 6 oz and only about 20-21 yards.
It is up to you where to buy your yarn, I just would like you to have this information about sizes of the Chunky chenille yarn and if you buy from a company/companies misleading you about their yarn - you should know about them doing it.
The interesting thing is that BeCozi company has chenille yarn that is bigger than # 7 - it is our custom made Jumbo chenille yarn. It is thicker than Chunky chenille one, fluffier and fuller. Technically it would be size 8 but we never advertise it this way, we just call it "BeCozi Jumbo chenille yarn" realizing that officially there is no number for our Jumbo chenille yarn. Here is a picture showing the difference between Chunky and Jumbo chenille yarn:
Jumbo chenille yarn is more expensive and there is less of it on a skein because it is much thicker than Chunky chenille yarn: about 15 yards on one skein. Blankets made with our Jumbo chenille yarn feel like a big, fluffy cloud in your hands!
Here is our Chunky chenille yarn blanket below - can you see the difference?
This is the Basket weave with a twist blanket - watch our new video tutorial here.
You will need 3 skeins of our Cloud and 3 skeins of Misty green colors, as well as one skein of White color.
